By initiative of Jorge Eliecer Gaitán, (Minister of Education and later candidate to the presidency of Colombia, assassinated in 1949) founded the Ateneo Nacional de Altos Estudios (National Athenaeum of Higher Learning) which became later the Instituto Caro y Cuervo , one of the most prestigious philological and linguistic research institutions in the Spanish language.

Por iniciativa de Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, (Ministro de Educación y más tarde candidato a la presidencia de Colombia, asesinado en 1949) fundó el Ateneo Nacional de Altos Estudios que pasó a ser posteriormente el Instituto Caro y Cuervo una de las más prestigiosas instituciones de investigación filológica y lingüística en el idioma español.
