In the past, these genera have sometimes been united in a single family, the Physeteridae, with the two Kogia species in the subfamily Kogiinae; however, recent practice is to allocate the genus Kogia to its own family, the Kogiidae, leaving the Physeteridae as a monotypic (single extant species) family, although additional fossil representatives of both families are known.

Estos géneros son algunas veces unidos en una misma familia, Physeteridae, con las dos especies de Kogia en la subfamilia Kogiinae, sin embargo la tendencia actual, es ubicar el género Kogia en su propia familia, Kogiidae quedando Physeteridae como una familia monotípica (única especie existente); sin embargo, se conocen fósiles adicionales representativos de ambas familias.
