He grew up with his grandparents in a mining district. As a young boy, he learned the blacksmith’s trade, and soon after, he started to work at a locksmith’s shop. At the end of World War II, Janosch’s parents took him to West Germany, where he worked in textile factories around Oldenburg; he studied in the School of Textile Engineers of Krefeld, where he learned the craft of stamping from Gerhard Kadow, Klee’s disciple.

Se crió con sus abuelos en una colonia minera y a la temprana edad de trece años comenzó a aprender el oficio de herrero; poco después entró a trabajar en una cerrajería. Al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los padres de Janosch huyeron con su hijo a Alemania del Oeste, en donde éste trabajó en distintas fábricas textiles en las inmediaciones de Oldenburg y estudió en la Escuela Superior de Ingeniería Textil de Krefeld, lugar donde también aprendió el diseño del estampado de la Tras unos semestres de prueba tuvo que interrumpir sus estudios de arte por «falta de talento».
