Es handelt sich um eine überwiegend eingleisige Strecke, welche durchgehend elektrifiziert ist. Sie wurde erst im Jahre 1976 durchgehend in Betrieb genommen und gilt als eine der spektakulärsten Gebirgsbahnen mit zahlreichen Tunneln und Brücken, darunter mit dem Mala-Rijeka-Viadukt die mit 198 Metern Höhe über Grund höchste Eisenbahnbrücke der Welt.
