Since Morocco's 1975 annexation of the former Spanish colony and the 1981 OUA summit in Nairobi on self-determination, which set up an implementing committee on the Western Sahara referendum, Moroccan positions have evolved while still placing the emphasis on Moroccan territorial integrity.

Depuis l’annexion de cette ancienne colonie espagnole par le Maroc en 1975 et le sommet de l'OUA de Nairobi sur l’autodétermination (1981) qui institue un « comité de mise en œuvre » du référendum au Sahara occidental, les positions marocaines ont évolué tout en restant dans le cadre de l’intégrité territoriale du pays.
