In 1925, Collip obtained in crystalline form an extracted substance of the parathyroid of the cow that has the following characteristics: polypeptide composed of many amino acids, still not determined, and probably together with a protein; it gives the reactions of proteins by chemical investigation (xantho-proteinic reaction); it contains traces of iron and sulfur; its pH is of 4.8; insoluble in fats and ether, somewhat soluble in alcohol and very soluble in acidulated water; it is destroyed by the digestive ferments and for this reason, it is not administered by the digestive tract.
