Ahogy pillantásom az egyik arcról a másikra vándorolt, mindazt felfedeztem bennük, amit egy festőművész témául kívánhatna magának: Hollingsworthben a komor, puritán bírót, aki egy boszorkányperben élet-halál felől ítél; Zenobiában magát a boszorkányt, nem valamilyen vén, ráncos és töpörödött, hanem szép boszorkát, aki a sátánt sátáni bűverővel kísérti meg; Priscillában pedig a sápadt áldozatot, akinek testét-lelkét varázslatával megrontotta.
