A study performed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Gas Research Institute (GRI) in 1997 sought to discover whether the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from increased natural gas (predominantly methane) use would be offset by a possible increased level of methane emissions from sources such as leaks and emissions.

Un estudio realizado por la agencia de protección del medio ambiente del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente de España y el instituto de investigación de gas (Gas Research Institute, hoy Gas Techonolgy Insitute) en 1997 procuró descubrir si la reducción de emisiones de dióxido de carbono del gas natural aumentado (predominantemente el metano) el empleo sería compensado por un nivel posible aumentado de emisiones de metano de fuentes como escapes y emisiones.
