All das ergibt sich in der vorgelegten Analyse aus dem Wettbewerb zwischen Kasus- und Genusmarkierung, der über die gemeinsame Interaktion mit Belebtheit zustande kommt: Korrelieren Kasus (bzw. thematische Rolle) und Genus mit dem gleichen Belebtheitsstatus (Dativ und Maskulinum: hohe Belebtheit, direktes Objekt und Neutrum: niedrige Belebtheit), kann eins von beidem aus Ökonomiegründen leicht morphologisch unausgedrückt bleiben (Synkretismus).

In the current approach, all this follows from the competition between case and gender marking, which comes about through the common interaction with animacy: If case (or more precisely thematic role) and gender correlate with the same animacy state (dative and maskuline: high animacy, direct object and neuter: low animacy), one of them can easily remain unexpressed for the sake of economy (syncretism).
