La seva història comença el 21 de desembre de 1915, quan 20 membres del Partit Socialdemòcrata d'Alemanya (SPD) en el Reichstag van votar en contra de l'autorització de més crèdits per al finançament de la Primera Guerra Mundial, incident aquest que va augmentar les tensions existents entre els líders del partit i la seva fracció més esquerrana, liderada per Hugo Haase i contrària a la guerra, que finalment va produir l'expulsió d'aquest del SPD el 24 de març de 1916.

On December 21, 1915, several SPD members in the Reichstag, the German parliament, voted against the authorization of further credits to finance World War I, an incident that emphasized existing tensions between the party's leadership and the left-wing pacifists surrounding Hugo Haase and ultimately led to the expulsion of the group from the SPD on March 24, 1916.
