A widely-accepted theory was that the term ' sushi ' originated from ' sushi ' meaning sourness as described in " Nihon Shakumei " ( The Japanese Etymological Dictionary ) and " Toga " ( an etymological dictionary ) compiled during the middle of the Edo period .
