Previous reports indicated that submaxillary saliva, but not parotid saliva, was crucial to thermoregulation in the male rat exposed to inescapable heat stress, and emphasized the lower level of hyperthermia associated with the initiation of submaxillary secretion as one factor accounting for the difference between individual salivary glands.
