A comparative study of these two amino acids allows us to differentiate the order of protonation of the three functional groups (carboxylic, amino, and guanidyl), mainly by the different modes of complexation with copper(II), which is found in an octahedral coordination: arginine behaves like a bidentate ligand (glycine type) whereas canavanine behaves like a tridentate ligand.

Cette étude comparative de ces deux aminoacides a permis de mettre en évidence une différence d'ordre de protonation des trois groupements fonctionnels (carboxylique, aminé et guanidyle) qui se traduit par une différence de mode de complexation avec le cuivre(II) situé dans un état de coordinence octaédrique: l'arginine se comporte comme un ligand bidenté (type glycine) alors que la canavanine se comporte comme un ligand tridenté.
