Before the war broke out and Iraq had been invaded, ALECSO itself had written to the Director-General of UNESCO to warn him that the country’s entire cultural and archaeological heritage might be at serious risk in the event of war, and that UNESCO and the other specialized agencies should embark on an awareness campaign to alert the world to that fact.
