The board has responsibilities and powers over the regulation, use and management of water in the Nunavut settlement area, "on a basis at least equivalent to the powers and responsibilities currently held by the Northwest Territories Water Board under the Northern Inland Waters Act".

Ce droit tribal est administré par les tribus, l’État administrant pour sa part tous les droits reliés aux eaux non visées par celui-ci. Pour régler les conflits découlant de cette double administration, un conseil mixte — le Fort Peck-Montana Compact Board — a été mis sur pied.
