En # hile adoptó la Ley Indígena (Ley # ), en la cual el Estado reconoce a los indígenas como “los descendientes de las agrupaciones humanas que existen en el territorio nacional desde los tiempos precolombinos, que conservan manifestaciones étnicas y culturales propias siendo para ellos la tierra el fundamento principal de su existencia y cultura.” Se señalan como principales etnias indígenas de Chile a: mapuche, aimara, rapa nui o pascuenses, atacameños, quechuas, collas, kawashkar o alacalufe y yámana o yagán
