At the beginning of the 1960s, the decade in which the economic blockade was first imposed, the economic relations of the country had been concentrated in the United States (representing 90 per cent of all trade), while in 1989, with the collapse of socialism in Eastern Europe, 85 per cent of Cuban foreign trade was with the countries of the former Council for Mutual Economic Assistance.
