Le procédé consiste: à capturer une image d'un visage dans n'importe quelle pose; à appliquer à l'image un algorithme de détection de visage en cascade pour trouver la position du visage dans l'image; à appliquer une recherche de modèle d'apparence actif (Active Appearance Model) (AAM) pour interpréter l'orientation du visage dans l'image; à estimer l'orientation (horizontale et verticale) du visage; à synthétiser une vue du visage à partir de n'importe quel angle, ou appliquer une analyse de composante principale adaptative (Adaptive Principal Component Analysis) (APCA) à une vue frontale synthétisée du visage en vue d'une reconnaissance.
