শ্রমণিক সংস্কৃতির মূলবক্তব্য হচ্ছে: জীবনকে ক্রমবর্ধমান নৈর্ব্যাক্তিককরণ বা সন্ন্যাসবাদের অভিমুখী বিভিন্ন স্তর মনে করতে হবে। এই জীবনযাত্রায় সকলেই হচ্ছে তীর্থযাত্রী (শ্রমণ), সকলেরই একমাত্র উদ্দেশ্য হচ্ছে 'সম্মুখে অগ্রসর হও' এবং সকলেই জীবনসমুদ্র অতিক্রম করে তীরে পৌঁছুতে বদ্ধপরিকর।

The essence of Sramanic culture is that, in a life conceived as stages of increasing depersonalization or asceticism, every one is a pilgrim (sramana) whose only motto is to 'keep on going' and who is determined to cross the Sea of Life and to reach its other shore.
