In the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) which ended the War of the Austrian Succession, Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa had to cede the duchies of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla to her enemy, Philip V of Spain. At Louis XV's instigation, Philip and Élisabeth became Duke and Duchess of Parma.

In het Verdrag van Aix-la-Chapelle, welke de Oostenrijkse Successieoorlog beëindigde, werd keizerin Maria Theresia van Oostenrijk gedwongen om de hertogdommen Parma, Piacenza en Guastalla af te staan aan haar vijand, op 11 december 1748 terug naar Versailles, terwijl ze op weg naar Parma was, om haar vader te bedanken.
