The left bank is broader and more boring than its diverting right counterpart; I had a long walk ahead of me, past the chaotic rear of the presidential palace with its intimidating gates and outbuildings, along streets that suffered fatalistically under the vigilance that radiates from the centre of power, past the young guards in their uniforms, men who chewed slowly and watched me closely until I had got to the end of the street, smoking high-tar cigarettes with desperate intensity, as if they wished to burn the smell of diesel out of their bodies.

La rive gauche est plus étendue et plus morne que la conviviale rive droite, j’avais un long chemin à parcourir: longer l’arrière décousu du palais présidentiel avec ses grilles et ses hangars intimidants, traverser des rues qui souffraient fatalement de la vigilance autour du centre du pouvoir, passer devant des jeunes gardes en uniforme, des hommes qui m’épièrent jusqu’à ce que j’eusse quitté la rue, mâchonnant lentement tout en fumant un tabac lourd, à l’odeur violente, comme s’ils voulaient brûler les relents de diesel qui imbibaient leurs corps.
