১৯৪০ সালের লাহোর রেজোলিউশনের ভিত্তিতে পাকিস্তান আন্দোলনের সূচনার সাথে সাথে আলি নারায়ণগঞ্জে এই আন্দোলনের আয়োজন করেছিলেন। ১৯৪৬ সালে তিনি বঙ্গীয় আইনসভার সদস্য নির্বাচিত হন। তিনি ঢাকার পঞ্চম ও শেষ নবাব খাজা হাবিবুল্লাহকে পরাজিত করেছিলেন। তিনি ব্রিটিশ সরকারের দ্বারা খান সাহেব উপাধিতে ভূষিত হন, যা তিনি ১৯৪৪ সালে ব্রিটিশ রাজ নীতিমালার জন্য বাতিল করেছিলেন।

With the beginning of the Pakistan Movement based on the Lahore Resolution of 1940, Ali organised the movement in Narayanganj. In 1946, he was elected a member of Bengal Legislative Assembly. He defeated Khwaja Habibullah, the last the Nawab of Dhaka. He was awarded the title Khan Sahib by the British Government, which he disavowed in 1944 for the policies of the British Raj.
