تضع المادة 76 معيارين (صيغتين) لتعيين الحافة الخارجية للهامش المغمور: فالمعيار الأول يستند إلى سمك المواد الرسوبية (الفقرة الفرعية 4 (أ) ‘1’)، أي سمك الطبقة الرسوبية داخل الحدود الخارجية للجرف القاري حيث لا يقل هذا السمك عن 1 في المائة من المسافة بين النقطة المعنية وسفح المنحدر القاري (صيغة سمك الطبقة الرسوبية).

Article 76 establishes two criteria (formulae) for establishing the outer edge of the submarine continental margin: the first criterion is based on the thickness of sedimentary cover (paragraph 4 (a) (i)), i.e. the thickness of sedimentary cover within the outer limit of the continental shelf must be at least 1 per cent of the distance from the foot of the continental slope (sediment thickness formula).

En el artículo 76 se establecen dos criterios (fórmulas) para trazar el borde exterior del margen continental submarino. El primer criterio está basado en el espesor de las rocas sedimentarias (inciso ii) del apartado a) del párrafo 4, es decir, que el espesor de las rocas sedimentarias debe ser por lo menos el 1% de la distancia del pie del talud continental (fórmula del espesor de las rocas sedimentarias).

Статьей 76 предусмотрены два критерия (формулы) построения внешней границы подводной окраины материка: первый критерий связан с мощностью осадочного чехла (параграф 4(а)(i), т.е. мощность осадочного чехла в пределах ВГКШ должна быть не менее 1 процента расстояния от подножия континентального склона(седиментационная формула).
