However, the main building of Kan-eiji Temple and most of the branch temples were burnt down during the Battle of Ueno fought between the Shogitai and Imperial troops in 1868. Thereafter, the hill of Ueno was developed into Tokyo Prefectural Park in 1873 at the motion of Dutch Doctor Anthonius Franciscus Bauduin. Later on, the Department of the Imperial Household, which had control over the park, granted it to Tokyo City in 1924, and the park was named "Ueno Onshi Koen," or Ueno Imperial Gift Park.

우에노사쿠라기, 야나카는 예로부터 도에이잔 간에이지 부지로 곳곳에 간에지에 속한 절이 많은 사찰 마을이었지만, 1868년 소기타이(창의대)와 신정부군의 우에노 전쟁 때 간에이지의 가람을 비롯한 대부분이 소실되어 버렸습니다. 그 후, 1873년 우에노노야마는 네덜란드 의사인 보드윈 박사의 진언으로 도쿄부 공원으로 정비하게 되었습니다. 그 후 1924년에 궁내성에서 도쿄시로 관할이 바뀌면서 우에노 은사 공원으로 이름이 붙여졌습니다.
