The first ancestor of the zonal group, now known as Pelargonium zonal, was collected in the province of Western Cape in 1689 and was sent to Europe and described by the Dutch botanist 9 Jan Commelijn (1629–1692).

Le premier ancêtre du groupe zonal, connu actuellement sous le nom de Pelargonium zonale, fut collecté dans la province du Cap-Occidental (en Afrique du Sud), durant l'année 1689 et fut envoyé en Europe puis décrit par le botaniste hollandais Jan Commelijn (1629-1692).
