In this context, microscopic observation of the stratigraphic sequences, together with the microanalysis of pigments and the use of the scanning electron microscope, are two tools that have enabled not only the identification of the pigments existing within the painting, but also the determination of their distribution and location within the internal structure of the work.These techniques have been tested on a new, smaller version of the famous Madonna of Foligno by Raphael, on display at the Vatican art gallery, with very significant data relating to the artistic process of this painter being obtained.

La observación microscópica de las secuencias estratigráficas junto al microanálisis de pigmentos asociado a microscopía electrónica de barrido, constituyen dos herramientas que han permitido, no solo la caracterización de los pigmentos, sino también de su distribución y localización en la estructuración interna de la obra. Datos muy valiosos para estudios relacionados con la atribución de obras. Estas técnicas se han ensayado sobre una nueva versión, de menores dimensiones, de la conocida Madonna de Foligno de Rafael, exhibida en la Pinacoteca Vaticana, obteniéndose datos relacionados con el proceder artístico de este pintor.
