Το 1964 κέρδισε το Βραβείο Νόμπελ Ιατρικής μαζί με τον Κόνραντ Μπλοχ για τις ανακαλύψεις τους σχετικά με το μηχανισμό και τη ρύθμιση της χοληστερίνης και το μεταβολισμό των λιπαρών οξέων ενώ ήταν διευθυντής του Ινστιτούτου Κυτταρικής Χημείας Μαξ Πλανκ στο Μόναχο.

In 1964 he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Konrad Bloch for their discoveries concerning the mechanism and regulation of cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism while he was director of the Max-Planck Institute for Cellular Chemistry in Munich.
