قدم زهونغ وآخرون (2012) أدلة على وجود الدايكوفول في الوسائط البيئية بعيداً عن المصادر، وذلك استناداً إلى دراسة أجريت على بيانات مياه البحر السطحية وهواء الطبقة الحدية البحرية التي جُمعت أثناء رحلة بحرية من بحر الصين الشرقي (33,2 درجة شمال) إلى أعالي المنطقة القطبية الشمالية (84,5 درجة شمال).
