She is affiliated with the project «The Self in Social Spaces: Conceptualizations and Representations in the Textual and Material Culture of Medieval Scandinavia». Holmqvist is working with inscriptions with runes and letters from the Middle Ages, and is interested in the aspects of the self which are present in the inscriptions, and how the self and self-understanding is expressed in them.

Fra august 2017 har Holmqvist vært ansatt som ph.d.-stipendiat ved NIKU i tilknytning til prosjektet Holmqvist arbeider med innskrifter med runer og bokstaver fra middelalderen og er interessert i hvilke aspekter av selvet som kommer fram i innskriftene, og hvordan selvforståelse kommer til uttrykk gjennom dem.
