O necelých čtyřicet let později ve své knize The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences z roku 1923 napsal, že Merrick byl „nejodpornější exemplář lidstva, který jsem kdy viděl (...) nikdy jsem se do té doby nesetkal s tak zvrácenou verzí člověka, jako byl tento jedinec“.
