The 1983 revision of the ICC's Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP 400) Articles 25 (b(ii)) and 26 (b(ii)) specifically encouraged the use of bills of lading and combined transport documents which indicated "...some or all of the conditions of carriage by reference to a source or document other than the transport document itself (short form/blank back transport document)".

В редакции 1983 года Унифицированных правил и обычаев для документарных аккредитивов МТП (UCP 400) статьи 25 b) ii) и 26 b) ii) конкретно поощряли использование коносаментов и документов смешанной перевозки, в которых указаны "...некоторые или все условия перевозки путем ссылки на источник или документ, помимо самого транспортного документа (транспортный документ краткой формы/без текста на обороте)".
