In the 1830s, the physician and scientist Elias Lönnrot travelled thousands of kilometres, in summer on foot and in winter on skis, throughout the vast Karelian region in order to collect the oral poems about Väinämöinen and other ancient Finnish heroes into what would become Finland’s national epic, the Kalevala.
