While the eastern part evolved to the Kingdom of Arles and the Free County of Burgundy, incorporated into the Holy Roman Empire in 1032, the western Duchy of Burgundy, established about 918 by Richard the Justiciar, became a fief of the French royal House of Capet under King Robert II in 1002.
