আমরা ইতোমধ্যে যে জীববৈজ্ঞানিক শ্রেণিবিন্যাস পদ্ধতি দেখেছি সেই পদ্ধতি অনুযায়ী 'মানুষ' শব্দটার সত্যিকার মানে হল 'হোমো গণের অন্তর্ভুক্ত প্রাণী'। অতীতে এই 'হোমো' নামক গণটির আরও অনেক প্রজাতির প্রাণীর অস্তিত্ব ছিল।
