অনিতা নায়ার যখন একটি বিজ্ঞাপন সংস্থায় সৃজনশীল পরিচালক হিসেবে বেঙ্গালুরু শহরে কাজ করছিলেন তখনই তিনি তাঁর প্রথম বই সাট্যার অব দ্য সাবওয়ে নামে ছোট গল্প সংকলন লিখেছিলেন, যেটা তিনি হর-আনন্দ প্রেসকে বিক্রি করে দিয়েছিলেন। বইটির জন্যে তিনি ভার্জিনিয়া সেন্টার ফর দ্য ক্রিয়েটিভ আর্টস থেকে ফেলোশিপ জিতেছেন।

Nair was working as the creative director of an advertising agency in Bangalore when she wrote her first book, a collection of short stories called Satyr of the Subway, which she sold to Har-Anand Press. The book won her a fellowship from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
