A planet or moon's interior heat is produced from the collisions that created the body, by the decay of radioactive materials (e.g. uranium , thorium , and 26 Al ), or tidal heating caused by interactions with other bodies. Some planets and moons accumulate enough heat to drive geologic processes such as volcanism and tectonics. Those that accumulate or retain an atmosphere can also undergo surface erosion from wind or water.

행성이나 위성들의 내부열은 이들을 만들었던 물체(방사성 물질로 예를 들면 우라늄 , 토륨 , 26 Al 등이다)들끼리 충돌하여 발생한 열 및, 조석가속 으로 인하여 생겨났다. 일부 천체들의 경우 화산 이나 지각 운동 등 지질학적 활동이 생겨날 정도의 열을 간직하게 되었다. 이들 중 대기를 갖게 되는 천체는 바람이나 물로 인하여 지각의 침식 과정을 겪는다.
