In October 1986, on the thirtieth anniversary of the Hungarian popular uprising, together with Hungarian, Slovak, Czech and Polish civil rights activists, Ulrike Poppe advocated self-determination of the nations in the Eastern bloc and peacefully overcoming the division of Europe.
