Historisch gesehen ist zwischen Rührtrommel und Wirbeltrommel zu unterscheiden: Erstere ist eine Trommel mit bis zu 70 cm hoher Zarge und mit Saiten wie die Landsknechtstrommel des späten Mittelalters, letztere eine etwas niedrigere Trommel ohne Saiten, die erst im 19. Jahrhundert eingeführt wurde, um einen Kontrast zum hellen, schnarrenden Klang der Kleinen Trommel zu erhalten.

Historically the field and tenor drums are two different instruments. The former is up to 70 cm deep and has snares, like the side (lansquenet) drum of the late Middle Ages, while the latter is less deep, has no snares and was introduced in the 19th century to provide a contrast to the bright, snapping sound of the snare drum.
