It is located in the city's 2nd district, Leopoldstadt, near the banks of the Danube, on the southwestern end of the Reichsbrücke (Empire Bridge), which links Leopoldstadt with Donaustadt, the 22nd district of Vienna. The square was named Mexikoplatz in 1956, to honour the support Mexico gave to Austria in 1938, when it was the only country to protest the Anschluss (annexation) of Austria by Nazi Germany.

Het plein bevindt zich aan de rechteroever van de Donau, aansluitend op de Reichsbrücke. Het plein heette voorheen Erzherzog-Karl-Platz. In 1956 werd de naam veranderd ter ere van Mexico, dat in 1938 het enige land ter wereld dat bij de Volkenbond een officiële klacht indiende tegen de Anschluss.
