Already in the Upper Paleolithic, in the Solutrean culture, they used to sculpt little reliefs in stone or bone, even though the academic education underlines that the bas-relief was used as a technique by Mediterranean ancient cultures, or even today Wikipedia says in their definition that “it was conceived [...] in the Ancient Egypt”.
