Chucuito, una de las 13 provincias que forman el departamento del Puno, fue el centro de pago de impuestos durante la época de la Colonia. Se encuentra al sur de la ciudad, a unos 15 kilómetros, en la carretera hacia la frontera de Desaguadero, y en ella se puede apreciar una rica arqueología que se remonta hasta mil años antes de Cristo, aunque se han confirmado huellas de antiguas sociedades de cazadores y recolectores con una antigüedad de más de 10 mil años.
