For the period after 1870, studies vary in their conclusion as to when convergence started: some place it at about 1880 (based on the most commonly cited data, namely that compiled by Angus Maddison) and one study at about 1890.10 The latter date also turns out to be of some significance in that it marks the end of the great deflation that was associated with the demonetization of silver as the world switched to gold.11 The Bretton Woods system breakdown started with the August 15th, 1971 flotation of the US dollar following implementation of the Nixon Measures.

Cela a déclenché un mouvement mondial vers une monnaie rattachée à l'or, qui a marqué le début de l'étalon-or international.8 L'effet d'entraînement a mis un certain temps à se manifester et même au début de la Première Guerre mondiale, l'étalon-or n'avait pas encore une envergure mondiale, mais les historiens soulignent le degré remarquable de stabilité des prix qui prévalait à cette époque.9 En gardant à l'esprit ce tableau historique, il est intéressant de noter que les études consacrées à la période allant jusqu'à 1870 révèlent une forte divergence.
