The fall of Aquileia was the first of Attila's incursions into Roman territory; followed by cities like Mediolanum and Ticinum.[10] The Roman inhabitants, together with those of smaller towns in the neighborhood, fled en masse to the lagoons, and so laid the foundations of the cities of Venice and nearby Grado.

A várost a népvándorlás időszakának kezdetén, 401-ben előbb I. Alarich,[8] majd pedig 452-ben a hunok pusztították el,[9] s ezt követően megtört az addig virágzó város fejlődése, s a középkor kezdetén lassan feledésbe merült.[8] A venét lakosok a közeli lagúnákban telepedtek le, s erre az időre datálható Velence születése is.[10]
