En Cuatro Ciénagas se encuentran juntos tres morfos distintos de este cíclido, aprovechándose los tres de tres recursos alimenticios distintos, con adaptaciones morfológicas independientes. Los peces de los tres morfos se cruzan entre sí produciendo progenies en las que aparecen alevines de ambos morfos paternos. Una situación dientes cómicos y grandes caninos en la zona interna de sus labios, parece especialmente diseñado para una dieta piscívora, siendo el carácido Astyanax mexicanus su presa más frecuente, algo que se puede reproducir sin dificultad en el acuario.
