El impacto del ferrocarril, presente desde las 2 últimas décadas del siglo XIX, no fue notable porque salvo las vías que comunicaban entre sí a La Guaira, Caracas, Valencia y Puerto Cabello, las demás líneas se hallaban inconexas y por otra parte el desarrollo ferrocarrilero resultó truncado por la competencia de la carretera y del vehículo automotor, aunque ambos medios de transporte hubieran podido y debido complementarse.
