El 1902 fou Comissionat Auxiliar de la Comissió de Fronteres anglo-francesa a l'est del Níger, i després de prendre part en l'expedició Kano-Sokoto, que va unir els emirs a Nigèria sota control britànic en 1903, passà a ser comandant de Ordnance Survey a Escòcia el 1904.

He became Assistant Commissioner for the Anglo-French Boundary Commission in the East of Niger in 1902 and, after taking part in the Kano-Sokoto expedition which brought the Emirs in Nigeria under British control in 1903, he became Commander of the Ordnance Survey of Scotland in 1904.
