Wenn vor diesem Hintergrund das abstrakte Nomen civitas als „Ensemble von cives“ [6] begriffen werden kann, so hätten wir konsequenterweise jegliches Verständnis des Wortes „Ensemble“ zu vermeiden, das den Sinn einer mit sich selbst identischen Totalität nahelegen würde; vielmehr wäre unvermeidlich von einer irreduziblen Pluralität von „concitoyens“ oder „Mit-BürgerInnen“ auszugehen, von einer Pluralität, die im Übrigen keineswegs durch die bloße Anzahl von cives bestimmt wäre, sondern durch genau jene Beziehungen und Wechselbeziehungen, die diese cives miteinander unterhalten.

If the abstract noun civitas can be understood as “the ensemble of cives” [6] , then we would consequently have to avoid any understanding of the word “ensemble” in the sense of a totality identical in itself; rather we would inevitably have to take into account an irreducible plurality of “co-citizens”, a plurality which is of course not so much defined by the mere number of cives, but precisely by the relations and interrelations that those cives maintain among themselves.

Si l’on peut comprendre sur cet arrière-plan le nom abstrait civitas comme l’ensemble des cives, il faut en toute rigueur éviter d’employer mot « ensemble » dans un sens qui pourrait suggérer une totalité identique à elle-même : on doit au contraire partir d’une pluralité irréductible de « concitoyens », d’une pluralité qui du reste ne serait pas déterminée par le simple nombre des cives, mais par les relations réciproques que ceux-ci entretiennent entre eux.
