Since the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s, when tissue from the abdominal wall was first used for breast reconstruction via a pedicled transverse rectus abdominus myocutaneous (TRAM) flap, first published by Hartrampf et al. in 1982, the options of autologous breast reconstruction without the use of a silicone gel implant have greatly improved.
