In 1602, the Dutch established the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and in the following decades, they gained a foothold in Batavia and Amboina. For almost 200 years, the company was the dominant European power in the archipelago.[44] It dissolved in 1800 following bankruptcy, and the Netherlands established the Dutch East Indies as a nationalised colony.[45]

In 1602 richtten de Nederlanders de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie op, ook wel VOC genoemd, en vormden zij de belangrijkste Europese macht in de regio. Na het faillissement van de VOC in 1798 kregen de Nederlandse belangen in het huidige Indonesië vanaf 1816 de officiële naam Nederlands-Indië mee en werden ze een kolonie. Tijdens het grootste gedeelte van de koloniale periode had Nederland slechts een lage mate van autoriteit in de gehele archipel.
