Ciutat Vella (The Old City) was long surrounded by a wall but more and more factories were opened inside the city walls and meant rapid overpopulation, which in turn led to it being torn down and a new large residential neighborhood, L'Eixample (The Enlargement) was built up and streched all the way to the nearby villages which today make up Barcelona.

Ciutat Vella (gamla staden) var länge omringad av en mur men allt fler fabriker öppnades innanför stadsmuren och innebar snabbt överbefolkning, vilket i sin tur ledde till att den var tvungen att rivas ner och ett nytt stort bostadsområde, L’Eixample (utvidgningen) byggdes upp och sträckte sig till de närliggande byarna som idag tillsammans bildar staden.
